Painless Air Travel with Children- Tips for Parents

Painless Air Travel with Children- Tips for Parents by Nancy Myers

Whoever said, “half the fun is getting there” never sat in a crowded airport terminal with a crying, famished toddler and no relief in sight. Before the summer travel season begins, arm yourself with these clever tips and suggestions to make the travel days “smooth sailing” for everyone.
Planning Ahead

1. If there are several kids and two adults traveling together, consider booking seats in different rows. The kids can trade places mid-flight and enjoy some one-on-one time with each parent. If one child gets especially distracting to surrounding passengers, the child has somewhere else to go. Even ten rows may be enough soothe both the child’s and the passengers’ nerves.

2. Take advantage of the pre-boarding call for families by sending one adult ahead on the early boarding call to install safety seats, stash backpacks, and maybe stow a surprise in the kid’s seats. The remaining adult and children then board the plane at the very last moment. This way the kids have every last minute available to stretch their legs before they face the close quarters in their seats, and it may increase the anticipation and novelty of airplane travel.

3. If the travel schedule allows, large families with two adults may do well to actually fly separately - one adult and kid(s) a few hours preceding the other adult and kid(s). This works on the premise that one adult and one or two kids can maneuver more easily than two adults and two (or more) kids.

4. Think about your own comfort needs for the journey - wear comfortable, easy-care clothing and shoes built for walking, for example. Dark colors are also great for hiding stains - consider the traveling mom whose young son bonked his head at the airport and bled all over her shirt. Thankfully the boy was fine, but their flight was canceled and mom spent the next 24 hours in that shirt. It was navy blue, however, and no one noticed the stains.

5. The early departing adult can get curbside dropoff while the later departing parent can park the car and get shuttle transport to the terminal; the early departing parent can take all the checked luggage, then upon arrival can secure luggage and the rental car or shuttle schedules, so the later arriving parent can get easy curbside pickup.

6. Pack a light “fun” bag for the children. Kids as young as two may delight in having their own bag or backpack to carry through the trip - just be aware that it may lose appeal after a short while and will be carried by an adult, so plan accordingly. Let the child choose a special item or two to pack, but stash a surprise in the bag as well, and call on it if the child needs a distraction.

Pack Healthy Meals And/Or Snacks for the Journey

Bring healthy meals and snacks with you. It may be hard to believe, but airport and airline food has become more expensive, less diverse, and less healthy in the last several years. When flights are delayed, airport food options can quickly become scarce. Add that to the rigorous security restrictions for carrying liquids and gels, and travel delays with kids becomes daunting indeed. Again, planning for contingencies like delays can make the difference between “adventure” and “ordeal” on the travel day.

1, Find an insulated lunch box with a leakproof container to carry foods for your travel day. If you are flying, leave the ice pack at home or be prepared to surrender it to the security personnel, as it breaks the 3 oz rule. Instead, fill a bottle with ice cubes or a small container with water and freeze it ahead of time. It will work well as a coolant and when time comes to go through security the ice or water can be pitched. Otherwise, snacks should only be non-perishable.

2. Pack the lunchboxes before leaving home, but I don’t let the kids open them until they are on the plane. This serves several purposes: it keeps the kids moving towards the ultimate goal (buckled in their seats), and they may just act like it’s Christmas morning when they finally get to tear into their boxes and see what goodies you have stashed for them.

3. Be sure to fill the containers with goodies that will delight and sustain through a long day. Remember that “treat” doesn’t have to mean “unhealthy” and variety is essential. There are plenty of options: dried fruit, fresh fruit, salad greens and other sliced vegetables, crackers, pretzels, popcorn, hard cheeses that tolerate room temperature, jerky, smoked salmon, chocolate, granola (note that bars are less messy but are usually loaded with sugar). If you wish to add a sweet treat, chewy fruit snacks are often a favorite. In consideration of other travelers, avoid common allergens such as nuts.

4. Don’t forget that you will need snacks and distractions for the trip as well. Many of the same foods will appeal to adults, but if you can carve out the time before the trip to prepare, create a “build your own appetizers” selection by packing different flavors and varieties of crackers and sliced breads, mini breadsticks, crostini, blini, pita chips, or other “base”. Then pack small quantities of plain or flavored cream cheeses (use a small spoon for spreading), olives, pickles, pimentos, capers, scallions, smoked salmon, beef jerky or other dried meats, hummus, sliced fresh or lightly steamed vegetables, or whatever else pleases your palate. You will be the envy of your cabinmates.

5. After traversing the security gates but before boarding, fill a drink bottle with fresh water in the terminal. You may even find a food vendor willing to provide ice. Just remember when you open the bottle mid-flight that the change in cabin pressure may cause the bottle to spill, so keep a napkin handy.

Winter travel is a memory, but picnic season and summer travel season are right around the corner. With a little planning and foresight, “half the fun is getting there” may come back into favor after all.

How to Maintain Happy Family Relations

How to Maintain Happy Family Relations
By Michael W James

The family is the most important structure on the planet. Despite this reality, the family unit is usually overlooked and sometimes abandoned. What can be done to protect this vital structure? How can we maintain and strengthen family ties? How does good family structure contribute to nation building?

Families are the building blocks of societies, therefore, to have better societies, we need to have better families. Having said that, we now need to identify where to start. Well, the best place to start is at the beginning, the parents. Parents play a very important and vital role in family life. Let us examine four things that we can do, that when applied, can significantly improve our family relations.

We need to be good role models for our children. Children are copy cats, so, if we are bad role models, they will copy it, the same is true if are we good role models. Secondly, we need to talk with our children. Lets face it, our children needs to let themselves be heard, by talking to and listening to them, we get to know what is on their minds. Knowing what they are thinking will enable us to give meaningful advice. Third, we need to get involved. The possibility of our children using illegal drugs will be greatly reduced if we get involved in their lives. We can do this by engaging in a number of activities such as, going to a movie, playing both indoor and outdoor games, preparing a meal, and helping with their home work just to name a few. Last we need to set rules. Children are not able to identify danger, so, someone else have to identify their own danger, so, therefore, setting rules is one way to protect our children and they will thank us for it years to come.

It is not difficult to see that good family structures contributes to nation building. Within the family there are prospective doctors, teachers, lawyers, nurses, engineers, and the list goes on, therefore, when we make the effort to develop good family relations, we are actually laying the groundwork for future societies. As parents, let us do everything we can to cultivate good relations within our families.

Gardening Advice For Beginners and Seasoned Gardeners

Gardening Advice For Beginners and Seasoned Gardeners
By Linda Lim

Gardening advice is relatively easy to find and is not hard to come by. We can get the gardening advice from various sources such as from gardeners, gardening catalogues, gardening books, gardening magazines and also on the Internet.

The thing to remember when you want to start gardening is to start small. We should always start with a small plant bed first, about 25 or 30 feet square which can accommodate for about 30 plants. This will allow you to try out your green thumb. If you like and enjoy your garden, then you can always expand and increase your planting.

Gardening must be done in an area that gets at least six hours of sunlight. We must choose a site with good soil. We can add mulch or compost as nutrients to the soil so that the plants will grow better.
Plants need to be fertilized throughout their growing season. The type of fertilize we use will depend on the soil content and pH balance but fertilize will definitely be needed for most plants. Compost can be also be used. Just by adding a few inches of organic mulch will improve fertility and help the soil to hold moisture.

On watering the plants, it is a little more varied as every type of plant needs different amounts of water. The amount of water will also depend on where you live, the climate and how much rain your area receives. Watering is more effective during the cooler parts of the day. During the hottest periods, plants will need watering about 3 times per week. Nevertheless, always make sure your plants receive enough of water as it is essential for the plants to grow.
Plants need to be pruned from time to time. Pruning plays an important role in our garden maintenance. If you did a bad job while pruning, don’t worry, treat it like a bad haircut. The plants will grow again.

Gardening is not an easy task as we have to fight against many outside forces such as weather, insects, disease and weeds. Most of the time, we are more concerned on how to get rid of insects and pests. When pests invade our garden and if we don’t get rid of them, they will takeover and ruin our garden. There are many different chemicals and pesticides in the market that can be used. The methods use will depend on individual eg. which chemicals are better, which are harmful and which ones are easier to administer.

Not many people are aware that gardening can actually harm the environment as a large amount of carbon dioxide can be released through tilling the soil. This will contribute to global warming. Cultivating and compacting the soil will destroy good fungi. Fertilizers like nitrogen and manure often leach out of the soil and pollute the water we drink. The increase of the globe’s average temperature is because of the carbon dioxide the soil emits when titled. But we can minimize the tilting by mulching or sheet composting.

The most valuable advice one can have in gardening is to do all things with moderation. We should bear in mind that too little and too much of something is not good. We just need patient and have a little care for our plants. At the end, we will surely see the results and reap the benefits.

Gardening not only adds to the beauty of our home but also give us much pleasure. So, let’s us enjoy our garden.

Dare to Dream About Home Plans

Dare to Dream About Home Plans
By Alice Lane

To many people life is all about dreaming and planning to fulfill those dreams. There are those who dream of making money and buying whatever they want. There are those who dream of family and spirituality and don’t really need much money. And there are those who dream of a home. These people may or may not think about lots of money. They may be the type who might take a Harmony Mountain cottage home plan and figure out how to do most of the work themselves. They know what they want and where they want it and often times even know how to get it.

Those with less construction talent may be looking for a similar house plan, ranch simple yet have no desire to build it themselves. Their dreams may include a particular place to go with their plans. Seeing that place is all part of the dream, finding the real location may be part of the fun. Traveling to shop for land can be a lifetime effort. Of course, for some, that is what life is all about.

For others, a home can be a dream but they really don’t have the capacity to dream of a location and try to find it. They also may not have the time or where-with-all to build it themselves. For these dreamers, finding their prairie house floor plans and finding a good contractor is what their dream is all about. It may not be as romantic but it is every bit as of their dream as anyone else.

No matter what your dream you can find your plans at House Plans and More. There you will find what you want if your dream is a Harmony Mountain cottage home plan. It is also for those dreamers of house plan ranch simple or prairie house floor plans.

Slipping Into Spring - Simple Ideas to Help Us Out of the Winter Blues

Slipping Into Spring - Simple Ideas to Help Us Out of the Winter Blues
By Dana Plazyk

Ditching the winter blues may not be as easy this year as in years past…especially after watching neighbors, family members, or perhaps ourselves struggle with staying afloat financially, job searching or wondering what your future holds for 2009 and beyond.

There are many cost-effective yet soul-soothing actions you can take around your home to make the transition from winter to spring a smooth and enjoyable trip and put contribute to a positive spin on outlooks.

Number one is to acknowledge and embrace the health and happiness that is all around you. Celebrate the positive instead of dwelling in the negative.

Changes in your home such as a fresh coat of paint will literally make your home feel “brand new”. Paint performs a miracle in transforming a room’s warm and receptive qualities. Windows can also benefit from light neutral shades, which will allow the most light to reflect into a room.

Moving furniture also has a “start over” kind of effect. You’ve seen it in home decorator magazines and TV shows…a few changes in furniture placement and picture groupings can definitely make a huge difference in the flow and energy of a room. Don’t be stuck thinking that the candelabra or vase that has sat on your mantel for years wouldn’t look fabulous as a coffee table centerpiece! You can even try reading online or purchase a book about the Chinese art of Feng Shui, which deals with how to achieve balance in each room through object placement.

After you’ve rediscovered your living room, have a picnic (minus the ants, of course)! Use all the trimmings–blanket, basket, plastic utensils, and a healthy lunch…and don’t forget friends and family.

Real plants not growing yet? Opt for their silk counterparts! Lush green plants and spring blooms give us the impression of change and growth. What better way to bring these emotions into your home than with Nature? Most silks available nowadays are so lifelike, that you might even fool people into thinking you have a greenhouse out back! Your bonus? No maintenance with the exception of an occasional dusting.

Change your daily routine by exercising in the morning rather than the evening or vice-versa. Do something different with your hair. Don’t be afraid to wear a pair of earrings that you normally save for a special occasion. Look in fashion magazines to see how you could pair pieces of clothing you wouldn’t have thought of before. Be adventurous!

Sometimes getting outside of your comfort zone is the best way to discover new things about yourself and the world around you. Little steps out of the winter blues will make a big difference in how you feel about yourself and the world around you. The only thing left to do is to take action!

Dana Plazyk loves creativity and enjoys writing about it. Veggies - One Of The Foods That Speed Up Metabolism!

Imagine this…

Vegetables are tasty, good for you, fairly low cost and are among the foods that speed up metabolism - which we feel as increased energy - but you knew that.

You’ve been trying to eat better and have more foods that speed up metabolism, so you have been eating lots of vegetables with your meals. Even so, you still barely have the energy to drag yourself through the day.

By the time you get home from work all you want to do is plant yourself in front of the TV and relax until bedtime.

Finally, the next morning when the alarm goes off, you feel like you’ve just finished running a marathon. You aren’t rested at all! You hit the snooze button as many times as you can and then finally drag yourself out of the bed. First destination? The coffee pot - ALWAYS!

Stop blaming it on your bed. Maybe you just aren’t getting the nutrients you thought you were getting. Foods that speed up metabolism and provide the right vitamins and so on… will give you plenty of energy - if you eat them correctly. Did you know that a large number of vitamins and minerals are water soluble? It makes a big difference!

When we cook our vegetables - which almost always involves boiling them in water - we are dissolving the vitamins and minerals! They are water soluble. We literally pour them down the drain! What’s left over has - by comparison - very little nutritional value.

Guess what? Most vegetables can be eaten raw. Plus, they usually taste better that way! When given the opportunity, always opt for raw.

The up side is that there are TONS of benefits to doing it that way.

First, you stop throwing out all the nutrients! You are likely to notice an increase in energy almost immediately. Your general feelings of well being will get a boost as well.

Second, they just flat out taste better.

Third, if you don’t use them, you don’t have to wash your cooking utensils.

Fourth, LOUDLY chomping down on a crisp celery stalk or carrot stick can be your revenge against a family that can be nonsupporting at times. Do it right and you can blow trains of thought totally out of the water. You can disrupt conversations and generally drive people nuts. Just wait until later to start laughing! (Try it - it’s funny. Maturity is highly overrated.)

Fifth, raw vegetables provide a lot of good fiber and roughage.

Don’t forget, they taste better too!

Your goal…try to eat at least one raw vegetable at each meal.

Always be sure to wash your vegetables thoroughly. When you get them from the store, they DO have chemical and pesticide residues on them. If you want a healthier alternative, go organic.

The average diet doesn’t provide all the nutrients we need, so if you don’t take a daily vitamin supplement, it would probably be a good idea to start.

Eating healthy foods that speed up metabolism will provide your diet with more of the nutrients your body needs. You shouldn’t give up the vitamins, but you won’t be in such dire straights.

Just make it a point to eat your veggies raw and soon you could be one of those irritating people who are full of energy and leap out of bed in the morning.
